Tanjung Bungah Landslide: The Ninth Victim Body Found

GEORGE TOWN, Oct 22 – The search and rescue (SAR) team have discovered the body of the 9th victim buried at a construction site in Lengkok Lembah Permai, Tanjung Bungah this evening. Fire and Rescue Department’s assistant director-general (operations and rescue) Edwin Galan Teruki, who is the operation commander, said the victim was found at about 6.20pm on Sunday.

Rescuers are trying to retrieve the body said to have been crushed by a large boulder. Edwin said with this, SAR team is optimistic of finding at least two more victims tonight. He said the ninth victim is found near the 7th and 8th victims, who were crushed by iron piles (cerucuk besi). He said that is also why it is taking a long time for SAR team to retrieve the bodies.

He said the size of the SAR operation will be reduced as the majority of victims have been recovered. Over 220 personnel from the police, Fire and Rescue Department, Civil Defense Force, Special Malaysia Disaster Assistance and Rescue Team (Smart) Putrajaya, Rela and medical teams are involved in the SAR operation. — PN
