GEORGE TOWN, Nov 10 – Penang Yang di-Pertua Negri Tun Abdul Rahman Abbas was admitted to the Penang Hospital (HPP) on October 20 and is currently in a stable condition and being treated at the intensive care unit (ICU), said Penang State Secretary Farizan Darus. He said Rahman, 79, was admitted for medical check after suffering from a stomachache.
“Based on the examination by the hospital specialists, Rahman was advised to undergo intestinal surgery. The surgery was successfully held on October 22 and currently, he is in a stable condition. I visited him today and he is able to move in his ward,” he said in a press conference today.
“Tun was still in the ICU to allow for closer monitoring of his condition. For now, visits were limited to close relatives, only his closest family members, Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng and myself are allowed to visit him. I ask that everyone, the people of Penang and throughout the country to pray for Tun’s recovery to enable him to continue discharging his official duties as Penang Yang Dipertua Negeri,” he added.
Kepala Batas-born Abdul Rahman, 79, was formerly a teacher before he became an active Umno politician. He was appointed as Penang Yang Dipertua Negeri in 2001 and has since been reappointed to the same position on 2005, 2009, 20011, 2013, 2015 and April 2017. — PN
