GEORGE TOWN, Dec 4 – Penang Umno today urged the DAP-led state government to explain the Bumiputera quota of houses released since 2009. Chairman of Penang Umno Liaison Committee Datuk Seri Zainal Abidin Osman said according to the Auditor-General’s 2016 Report, there was RM110.93 million in the Bumiputera Housing Trust Fund as of the end of 2016, an increase of RM15.31 million from RM85.62 million recorded at the end of 2015.
He said this increase was due to payments made by housing developers for the release of unsold Bumiputera quota units for 49 housing projects in 2016, with the number of released Bumiputera units amounted to 1,633. “Since 2009, the state government had not built one house to replace the Bumiputera quota of houses released,” he said in a statement here today.
Zainal Abidin, who is also Chairman of the Penang Federal Action Council, said the state government did not seem interested to provide housing for Bumiputera in Penang. “The state government is more interested in showing off their ability to make money and to save it rather than to spend it to build houses for Bumiputera in Penang. This approach is, morally and socially, a denial of Bumiputera’s right to home ownership,” he added. — Bernama
