SINGAPORE, Jan 8 – A three-hour early morning downpour caused flash floods today in eastern Singapore. The affected areas were some parts of Tampines Road; slip road of Bedok Road/New Upper Changi Road; Jalan Nipah; junction of Sim Avenue/Tanjong Katong Road; junction of Sim Avenue/Eunos Road 8; Arumugam Road; junction of Bedok Road/Upper Changi Road East; junction of Upper Changi Road/Bedok North Ave 4 and junction of Tampines Ave 12.

The floods subsided after the rain stopped and the roads became passable to traffic. The republic’s national water agency, PUB, had at around 7am started alerting the public via its social media platforms. On Jan 2, the National Environment Agency (NEA) said that for first two weeks of 2018, the weather in Singapore was expected to be wet.

The prevailing (northeast) monsoon season is forecast to continue into the first fortnight of 2018, it said on its website. NEA also said that during the next two weeks, the low-level winds over Singapore and the surrounding vicinity are expected to blow mainly from the northeast or northwest. Rainfall for the first half of January 2018 is expected to be above normal, it said. — Bernama
