KUANTAN, Jan 11 – Two mechanics charged in separate courts today with raping and extorting a 20-year-old shop assistant, pleaded not guilty. In the sessions court, Mohd Kamaruzzaman Mohd Kamarul Ariffin and Muhd Azrul Nizam Azri, both aged 30, were charged with raping the victim at a house near Lorong Setali 89, between 2am and 3.30am on Dec 29.

The charge, under Section 376 (1) of the Penal Code, was read out to them separately before judge Siti Aminah Ghazali. They faced a jail sentence of up to 20 years and whipping. The prosecution was conducted by deputy public prosecutor Norfatinah Abu Bakar while Mohd Kamaruzzaman and Muhd Azrul were represented by lawyers Muhamad Saifuldin Ab Rahman and Aiman As’ad Mohd Ghani, respectively.

Siti Aminah allowed bail of RM8,000 each in one surety and set Feb 15 for mention. In the magistrate’s court, the two accused pleaded not guilty to a charge of extorting the woman, causing her to hand over RM200 and her Nokia 3 cell phone worth RM609. The offence was allegedly committed at the Teluk Cempedak beach on Dec 28 at 10.30pm.

The charge, under Section 384 of the Penal Code and read together with Section 34 of the same Act, carries a jail sentence of up to 10 years, or a fine, or whipping, or any of the two. Mohd Kamaruzzaman and Muhd Azrul were allowed bail of RM4,000 with one surety each. Deputy public prosecutor Mohamad Shahrizzat Amadan prosecuted.

The three allegedly committed the offence to demand a sum of RM200 from the same victim, at the same place and time. All of them pleaded not guilty to the charge before magistrate Nurunaim Abdullah, who allowed them bail of RM3,000 in one surety each. They faced a jail term of up to two years or with fine or both.
