Yew Appointed As Penang’s New Mayor



GEORGE TOWN, Jan 17 – Penang Island City Council (MBPP) secretary Yew Tung Seang has been appointed as the new mayor of Penang Island to succeed retiring Datuk Maimunah Mohd Sharif. Yew, 54, whose earlier position was the council secretary, replaced Datuk Maimunah Mohd Shariff, who has taken the post of director- general of the United Nations (UN Habitat) Human Settlement programme.

State Local Government, Traffic Management and Flood Mitigation Committee chairman Chow Kon Yeow said today that the decision was made by Penang’s executive council. He said the state exco meeting also decided to name MBPP Engineering Department director Addnan Mohd Razali as the new council secretary.

Maimunah opted to retire on Jan 19 to take up the post of executive director of the United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN‑Habitat) in Nairobi, Kenya.Chow said the handing over of duties of the new mayor would take place on Friday while the official swearing-in ceremony for Yew to take up the post will be held on Monday, Jan 22. — PN
