KAMPAR, Feb 13 – Five individuals, including two women selling an array of 32 types of firecrackers and fireworks in the form of hampers were detained by police in two separate locations in Jalan Eu Kong near Gopeng, here yesterday.
Kampar district police chief Supt Ng Kong Soon said police on a public tip-off detained the suspects, aged 17 to 40, and seized RM5,000 worth of banned items at 9pm. He said during the raid the suspects were selling firecrackers and fireworks at the stalls in the area.
“The suspects wrapped firecrackers and fireworks in the form of hampers and put a price tag on the hampers to attract people to buy. he five suspects had no permanent jobs and wanted to make some fast money by taking advantage of the Chinese New Year celebrations,” he said at a press conference here today.
Ng said investigations found that all the suspects had no previous criminal records, and were remanded for a day to facilitate investigations under Section 8 of the Explosives Act 1957. He said police would take stern action against any individuals involved in any firecrackers and fireworks sales activities.
On another case, Ng said police detained a 44-year-old man and seized 51.01 grammes of heroin worth RM2,500 while the suspect was about to return to his home in Taman Kinta near Gopeng here, around 12pm, on Feb 6.
“Initial investigations found that the man was engaged in drug trafficking around Gopeng and had been released from jail three months ago after serving time for drug-related offences,” he said. — Bernama
