SEREMBAN, Feb 18 – The Yang Dipertuan Besar of Negri Sembilan Tuanku Muhriz Ibni Almarhum Tuanku Munawir today expressed the importance for all the people, regardless of their religion and race, to have tolerance and respect for one another.
“Respect is earned, not demanded … if we do not respect people, they will not respect us. I’m glad to be at an event where I can be with the people of all races,” he said at a luncheon held in conjunction with his 70th birthday and the Chinese New Year celebration here.
Tuanku Muhriz was accompanied by Tunku Ampuan Besar of Negri Sembilan Tuanku Aishah Rohani Tengku Besar Mahmud and their sons, Tunku Besar Seri Menanti Tunku Ali Redhauddin and Tunku Datuk Seri Zain Al-‘Abidin.
On arrival, the royal family was greeted by Negri Sembilan Chinese Assembly Hall adviser Tan Sri Lim Huah Leong and MCA National Youth chief Datuk Chong Sin Woon. At the event, which was attended by 1,000 guests, Tuanku Muhriz cut a cake and tossed the “yee sang”.
Guests were also entertained to a traditional Chinese dance performances by the Guang Dong Clan Association. At the event, Tuanku Muhriz also presented Chinese New Year “ang pow” to 200 needy children and senior citizens.
Meanwhile, Lim, in his speech, described Tuanku Muhriz as a ruler who was concerned with the people’s well-being and often got down to the ground to meet them.
“We would like to express our sincere thanks to Tuanku Muhriz and Tunku Ampuan Besar for attending the luncheon to celebrate his birthday and the Chinese New Year, which is held for the first time in Negri Sembilan,” he added. — Bernama
