PUTRAJAYA, Apr 10 – Election Commission of Malaysia Chairman Mohd Hashim Abdullah today announced that the polling day for the 14th general election (GE14) is on May 9 (Wednesday). Nomination day is fixed on April 28 while early voting will be held on May 5. It’s to finalise candidates in 222 parliamentary seats and 505 state seats. Campaigning will run from April 28 to 11.45pm on May 8.
This will mean contesting political parties have 11 days to campaign. In the 2013 general election, the campaign period lasted for 15 days. A writ would be issued on April 11 to the returning officers (RO) in charge of each constituency to inform them of their duties on nomination day and polling day.
EC chairman Mohd Hashim Abdullah said there were 14,940,624 registered voters. Of the total, 13,255 are early voters and 3,653 are overseas voters. He said GE14 will cost around RM500 million, making it the most expensive election in the country’s history to date. The 13th General Election (GE13) had cost RM400 million. Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak announced the dissolution of Parliament last Saturday on April 7, paving way for GE14. — PN
