Despite Ongoing Corruption Trial, Guan Eng Will Defend Air Putih Seat

GEORGE TOWN, Apr 19 – Despite his ongoing corruption trial, DAP secretary-general Lim Guan Eng will defend the Air Putih state seat in the coming 14th General Election (GE14).

In the announcement pertaining to the Bukit Bendera parliamentary seat and three state seats today, Penang DAP chairman Chow Kon Yeow said the Penang Island City councillor Chris Lee Chun Kit, 36, would replace the “out of favour” incumbent Yap Soo Huey in the Pulau Tikus state seat.

He said the incumbent for the Bukit Bendera parliamentary seat, Zairil Khir Johari, 36, would contest the Tanjung Bungah state seat while the parliamentary seat will be contested by Wong Hon Wai, 45, who was political secretary to then-Penang chief minister Lim, in the 13th General Election.

“This is the line-up picked by the party for the GE14 in the Bukit Bendera parliamentary seat and its three state seats,” he told reporters during the announcement here today.

The Bukit Bendera parliamentary seat has four state seats, namely Tanjung Bungah, Air Putih, Kebun Bungah and Pulau Tikus but the Kebun Bungah seat is contested by PKR which won through Cheah Kah Peng in the previous general election.

Zairil, who is also Penang DAP vice-chairman, won the Bukit Bendera parliamentary seat in the last general election with a majority 32,778 votes over Barisan Nasional (BN) candidate, Teh Leong Meng.

In the GE13, incumbent for Tanjung Bungah state seat, Teh Yee Cheu won the seat with a majority 5,515 votes against BN’s Datuk Seri Chia Kwang Chye and Independent candidate Beh Seong Leng.

For the Air Putih state seat, Lim is a two-term assemblyman, winning by a majority 7,744 votes against BN’s Tan Ken Keong in the last general election. As for the Pulau Tikus state seat, incumbent Yap who had opted not to defend the seat due to her pursuance of further studies in the United States, had won the seat in 2013 when she defeated BN’s Rowena Yam with a majority 8,220 votes. — Bernama
