GE14: Voters Queued Up As Early As 7am



KUALA LUMPUR, May 9 – The public began queuing up as early ad 7 am to exercise their voting rights to elect the government at the federal and state levels for the 14th general election (GE14). The polling process nationwide began at 8 am until 5 pm and the people took advantage of the good weather in the morning at many of the voting stations to cast their vote early.

Kelantan Barisan Nasional (BN) chairman Datuk Seri Mustapa Mohamed was among the voters to arrive early at the SK Batu Gajah, Tanah Merah, Kelantan besides BN candidate for Bentong parliamentary seat, Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai in SK Sulaiman, Bentong and BN candidate for Kijal state seat, Datuk Seri Ahmad Said in SK Kijal, Terengganu.

Other leaders who voted early were Puteri UMNO chief Datuk Mas Ermieyati Samsudin. who is BN candidate for Masjid Tanah parliamentary seat at SK Ramuan China Besar, Masjid Tanah, Melaka; BN candidate for Putrajaya parliamentary seat Datuk Seri Tengku Adnan Tengku Mansor in SK Putrajaya, Precinct 9 (1) and Kelantan Menteri Besar Datuk Ahmad Yakob in SMK Kampung Laut, Tumpat.

PAS president, Datuk Seri Abdul Hadi Awang voted at SK Rusila, Marang while PKR-Amanah candidate for Chempaka state seat, who is also the son of former PAS Spiritual Leader Datuk Nik Abdul Aziz Nik Mat, Nik Omar voted at the SMK Kota Jembal polling station.

Independent candidate for the Bukit Antarabangsa state seat Azwan Ali stole the limelight when he showed up wearing a white robe and two different-coloured shoes ” one red and the other white ” at the SK Klang Gate, Jalan Genting Klang polling station.

MIC president Datuk Seri Subramaniam, Johor Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin, Johor Baharu parliamentary seat BN candidate Tan Sri Shahrir Samad and BN candidate for Setiawangsa parliamentary seat Tan Sri Zulhasnan Rafique were among those who turned up early to cast their votes.

Others were people from all walks of life including senior citizens. They include Fatimah Che Ngah, 99, Lee Lean Beng, 88 and his wife Teoh Hor Kim, 82. While other voters came to cast their votes in wheelchairs and aided by the EC staff. The overall security situation is under control.

In REMBAU, Negeri Sembilan Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan said the voting process in the state went smoothly with no reports of untoward incidents thus far. Mohamad and his wife Raja Datin Seri Salbiah Tengku Nujumuddin as well as their five children cast their ballots at SJKC Chung Hua Rantau at 9.30 am.

A total of 587,108 electors in Negeri Sembilan are to exercise their right to cast their votes in the GE14 from 8 am to 5 pm. Negeri Sembilan has eight parliamentary seats and 36 state seats. In LABUAN, BN candidate for the parliamentary seat Datuk Rozman Isli cast his vote at the Kerupang polling station. — Bernama
