GEORGE TOWN, May 9 – Penang Barisan Nasional chairman Teng Chang Yeow criticised the Election Commission over what he claimed to be the poor conduct of polling in the 14th general election.

Teng, the BN candidate for the Tanjong Bunga state seat, said polling had been ‘very slow’ especially in the Bukit Bendera parliamentary constituency which was conducted by North East District Land Office staff.

“In certain rooms or streams, only one voter was casting the vote at one time despite two booths being prepared and I suppose there are too many new officers around in these areas,” he told reporters after casting his vote in the polling station at Sekolah Kebangsaan St Xavier’s Cawangan here.

He said there was a large turnout this morning but there was only one queue so it was a really long queue and some voters had to stand under the hot sun. Teng, who is also the Penang Gerakan chairman, urged the authorities to probe the scam phone calls that had been reportedly received by many political leaders and candidates.

“The authorities should investigate what happened. Why is this occurring at this particular of time?” he said. He claimed that he also received such calls last evening but did not pick up the calls since the unknown numbers were clearly from foreign countries.

“I have been receiving such phone calls all the while but we don’t expect it to happen during an election.” Teng is facing DAP’s Zairil Khir Johari, Chua Cheong Wee of Parti Rakyat Malaysia (PRM) and Lee Zheng Yong of the Malaysian United Party in a four-cornered tussle for Tanjong Bunga. — Bernama
