PUTRAJAYA, May 24 – The Women, Family and Community Development Ministry (KPWKM) will retain its name and need not be changed to the Ministry of Women and Family Development, said Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail.

Dr Wan Azizah, who also heads the ministry, said she had spoken to Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad and Chief Secretary to the Government Tan Sri Dr Ali Hamsa over the matter.

“I was made to understand (the matter) by the Prime Minister, and after checking with KSN (Chief Secretary to the Government) the old name will be maintained,” she said when speaking to reporters after beginning her official duties at the ministry here, today.

The ministry also issued a statement confirming the old name would be retained. On Monday, the Prime Minister when announcing the list of Cabinet ministers had referred to the portfolio as the Ministry of Women and Family Development.

In the 14th General Election on May 9, the Pakatan Harapan government led by Dr Mahathir toppled the Barisan Nasional-led administration which had ruled for over 60 years. — Bernama
