GEORGE TOWN, Aug 1 – Several roads around the Esplanade here will be closed and diverted from tomorrow until Sunday for the launching of the 2018 National Month and Fly Jalur Gemilang Campaign which will be officiated by Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad on Saturday night.
Northeast district police chief ACP Anuar Omar said people have been advised not to use the closed roads and should plan their journeys to avoid traffic congestion in the area during the four days.
“Jalan Tun Syed Sheikh Barakbah and its junction with Jalan Padang Kota Lama to the Clock Tower roundabout will be completely closed from 6pm tomorrow until Sunday while Jalan Tun Syed Sheikh Barakbah / Lebuh Light junction will be closed from 7pm on Saturday.
“Meanwhile Lebuh King and Lebuh Bishop will be closed at 7pm on Friday and Saturday to 12 midnight for the full rehearsal and and the actual event,” he said in a press conference here today.
He said apart from that, traffic from Lebuh Light/Jalan Kapitan Keling would be diverted to Jalan Kapitan Keling while traffic from the Clock Tower roundabout would be diverted to Lebuh Pantai and Pangkalan Weld from 7pm on Friday and Saturday.
Anuar said about 600 police personnel with the assistance of the police air unit would be deployed during the three days to ensure smooth traffic in the affected areas.
Meanwhile, Penang City Council Mayor Datuk Yew Tung Seang in another press conference said more than 80% of the preparations for the 2018 National Month and Fly Jalur Gemilang Campaign launching had been completed.
He said the remaining 20% would be ready by tomorrow before the full rehearsal on Friday night. There will be events on Friday and Saturday evenings leading to the launch at 8pm by Mahathir. Among the highlights are busker performances, Caring Bridge exhibition as well as food trucks.
“At the launch by the Prime Minister at 8pm, Tun Dr Mahathir will flag off a Jalur Gemilang Expedition Convoy comprising 18 vehicles and 40 high-performance motorcycles across Peninsular Malaysia, Sabah, Sarawak and Labuan,” he said.
There will also be a firework display and concert featuring leading local artistes including Bunkface, Ella, Siti Nordiana, Azlan and The Typewriter and other performers. — Bernama
