ALOR STAR, Aug 17 – The Kedah government intends to see major urban centres in the state linked by a Light Rail Transit (LRT) system which would benefit the people.
Chairman of the State Agriculture and Agro-based, Transportation and Primary Industry ComitteeAzman Nasrudin said Kedah people preferred private transportation as public transport here was inefficient.
“Public transport such as stage buses are not the first choice, probably because of their lack of punctuality, so the people prefer their own transport to move around, but the increase in the number of vehicles on the roads have led to more accidents.
“Which is why we are reviewing the public transport in Kedah and I also hope to see the major urban centres like Kulim and Kubang Pasu with a system like the LRT,” he said in reply to a supplementary question from Datuk Johari Abdul (PKR-Gurun) at the Kedah State Legislative Assembly sitting here today.
Johari wanted to know the steps the state government was taking to introduce more efficient public transportation to reduce the number of private vehicles and traffic congestion on the roads in Kedah.
Meanwhile, Azman said the state government had identified new bus companies to provide stage bus services (SBST), especially in the major towns in the state.
“Several routes had to be terminated as the number of passengers was small and it was difficult for the companies to meet the high cost of operations.
“We will look for ways to improve the quality of SBST services to encourage more Kedah folks to use the bus service, including providing free wifi service,” he said. — Bernama
