GEORGE TOWN, Aug 27 – Former Penang Umno chief Datuk Seri Zainal Abidin Osman died today from multiple myeloma which is a ftype of blood cancer in the plasma cells. He was 58.
According to his older brother, Datuk Dr Omar Osman, Zainal Abidin died at the Ampang Hospital in Kuala Lumpur at 2.07am today and would be laid to rest at the Sungai Acheh Muslim burial ground in Nibong Tebal after Zohor prayers.
Zainal Abidin, who is affectionately known as Tok Non, was the former Umno supreme council member as well as a former deputy rural and regional development minister. He was regarded as a calming figure in Penang Umno.
Zainal chaired the Penang Umno liaison committee during the period when Barisan Nasional (BN) first became the state Opposition in 2008. He relinquished all his posts in the party prior to the 14th General Election.
