PUTRAJAYA, Sept 17 – The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has confirmed that thus far no Malaysians have been reported injured in the wake of a super typhoon, internationally known as Typhoon Mangkhut which swept across Hong Kong, Macau and several areas in Southern China including Guangdong Sunday and Monday.

Wisma Putra in a statement today said as the situation in the affected areas remains fragile, hence all Malaysians are advised to defer non-essential travel to the affected areas for the time being. According to Hong Kong Observatory, Typhoon Mangkhut has gradually weakened and it is forecasted to move westward at 20kph towards Guizhou, Chongqing and Yunnan regions later in the day.

“Local authorities, however, have cautioned against the possibility of flooding due to heavy rain falls. Those who are visiting or living in the affected areas are advised to remain indoors and continue to monitor the latest weather updates, as well as safety advice from the local authorities,” said Wisma Putra.

As of today morning, four deaths were reported in Guandong province while more than 200 people were injured in Hong Kong and Macau. Approximately, 2.4 million people had also been evacuated in Guangdong province, it said.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs through the Consulate General in Hong Kong and Guangzhou are closely monitoring the situation, while also in close contact with the local authorities for the latest updates and advisories to assist any Malaysians.
