KUALA LUMPUR, June 30 – The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (“MCMC”) has issued a notice of no objection to the proposed merger between Digi.Com Bhd. and Celcom Axiata Bhd. (“Celcom”) which involves the business of Digi Telecommunications Sdn. Bhd. (“Digi”) and Celcom (collectively known as the “Applicant”). Digi and Celcom are the second and third largest mobile service operators today and the merger will result in the largest mobile service operator in Malaysia.

As such, MCMC has conducted a comprehensive assessment of this merger. On 1 April 2022, MCMC issued a Statement of Issues to Applicants in accordance with the Mergers and Acquisitions Guidelines dated 17 May 2019 to address concerns that these mergers will or are likely to significantly reduce competition in certain communications markets identified by MCMC.

Accordingly, the Applicant has submitted an undertaking containing the Applicant’s commitment to address the competition issues that have been highlighted by MCMC in the Statement of Issues. MCMC has considered the commitment offered by the Applicant and is satisfied that it will significantly reduce the competition issues that will or may arise as a result of this merger.
