GEORGE TOWN, July 6 – The State Government took note of the issue of water disruption which was reported to have occurred in the state due to several emergency situations encountered at the Sungai Dua Water Treatment Plant (LRA) this morning. The Sungai Dua LRA which produces more than 80 percent of treated water to the whole of Penang every day is very important to all the people of this state.

The Sungai Dua LRA was affected because it received a flow of raw water from Sungai Muda which was too murky, believed to be the result of flash floods that occurred in Baling, Kedah. As a result, this situation has made it difficult to operate so that the treatment plant could not function properly, and the Penang Water Supply Corporation (PBAPP) had to stop the operation of water treatment from 8 am to 12 noon this afternoon.

Despite this, PBAPP has taken early action by draining raw water from the Mengkuang Dam which serves as a ‘strategic dam’ to be supplied to consumers in the state. I understand that the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of PBAPP, Dato ’Ir. Jaseni Maidinsa and her team are meeting to discuss appropriate action and a more detailed statement will be shared by relevant parties. At 3 pm just now, PBAPP issued a detailed media statement regarding the situation.
