GEORGE TOWN, July 12 – George Town Festival 2022 officially kicks off today with an official opening ceremony at Hin Bus Depot on Jalan Gurdwara, George Town. Presiding over the ceremony is Penang Chief Minister YAB Chow Kon Yeow. The Festival’s return to the physical stage has generated overwhelming responses from the public.

The registrations for the Festival’s free events are mostly full and more than 3,000 tickets for the Festival’s ticketed shows were sold, with tickets for “The Senses” and “Mozart at the Mansion” were all snapped up one month before the shows.

In his speech, Penang Chief Minister, YAB Chow Kon Yeow said, “I must note that the Festival has aligned itself to the Penang2030 Vision of ‘A Family-Focused Green and Smart State that Inspires the Nation’. Through this year’s impressive curation, the Festival hopes to bring thousands of visitors, family members, and communities together while inspiring generations of arts lovers and practitioners.

The Festival has brilliantly leveraged on Penang’s best tourism assets, which are our two UNESCO-designated sites, and turned our ancient rainforest and historic buildings into venues for the arts. Some of the programmes are also exceptionally creative and original in their approach while others blend arts, history, culture, and technology in perfect harmony.

I want to commend the organiser for taking risks and having the foresight to make bold choices in this year’s curation to provide a shared space for festival-goers and to keep our community inspired. Covered by world renowned publications such as The New York Times, The Guardian, and CNN Travel, the much-awaited George Town Festival returns this year in a scaled-back – but equally exhilarating – physical format from 9 to 24 July 2022.

The 16-day Festival is all set to create a unique experience for the public to discover and appreciate George Town’s arts and cultural heritage through more than 80 programmes covering visual art, theatre, music, dance, film, photography, and more, all set to take place around George Town and beyond.

Under its theme “A Festival for Everyone”, the Festival’s 13th edition has been curated to make arts accessible to all while aiming to inspire generations of art lovers and practitioners and advocating for creativity and originality. Festival-goers can look forward to free programmes as 70 per cent of the Festival programmes are free-to-attend.

George Town Festival 2022 is a project by George Town World Heritage Incorporated (GTWHI), organised by TLM Event, endorsed by the Penang State Government and fully supported by the Penang State EXCO for Tourism and Creative Economy (PETACE), City Council of Penang Island (MBPP), and Penang Global Tourism (PGT).
