GEORGW TOWN, August 28 – The state tourism bureaus in Penang and Sabah inked a Memorandum of Collaboration (MoC) last week to leverage on one another’s resources, further expanding their target markets and boosting the overall tourist experience in both destinations. The MoC signing ceremony that took place on 20 August 2022 was signed between Penang Global Tourism Chief Executive Officer Ooi Chok Yan and Sabah Tourism Board Chief Executive Officer Noredah Othman; witnessed by Penang State Executive Councillor for Tourism and Creative Economy YB Yeoh Soon Hin and Sabah State Assistant Minister of Tourism, Culture and Environment YB Datuk Joniston Bangkuai.

According to Yeoh, the MoC marks the beginning of a long-standing collaboration between the two states and tourism bureaus, and is a step forward in Penang’s mission to cater and entice a wider spectrum of domestic audience. As we pivot our tourism strategy to suit the post-pandemic era, there is a crucial need for Penang to seal more deals with potential partners so we could tap into and reach new market segments,” he said in a statement today. 

Yeoh noted that these two tourism bureaus entered the MoC on the foundation of mutual interests and cooperation, which will see a healthy injection of business opportunities for players in the tourism ecosystem. The MoC does not only benefit the local authorities, but is also an added advantage to industry players and travelllers. Through this MoC, travellers can expect enhanced flight connectivity between Penang and Kota Kinabalu.

Dual destinations packages, exchange of ideas, curation of arts and cultural programmes as well as the development of other related tourism products, he added. At the same time, Ooi said that both bureaus are looking forward to the rewarding outcomes that would derive from this momentous partnership, in which he believes is groundbreaking to both parties as it creates a positive impact for economy, social development and etc.
