KUALA LUMPUR, September 5 – Rembau Member of Parliament, Khairy Jamaluddin today confirmed that he will not defend the Rembau parliamentary seat in the 15th General Election (GE15). Khairy, who is also the Minister of Health, said it was after he had been asked to give way to UMNO Deputy President, Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan who intends to run for the seat. Because he (Mohamad) is the UMNO Head of Rembau Division and I am his deputy.

So he has asked me to find another place because he said he wants to contest in Rembau. I have no obstacles, he said at a press conference after officiating the closing of the 2022 National Organ Donation Awareness Week here today. When asked which parliamentary seat he might be eyeing in GE15, the incumbent of the Rembau parliamentary seat since 2008 said that he has no preparation or idea to try his luck in any other parliamentary constituency so far.

I don’t know any other area. I have been in politics in Rembau for over 20 years and I have been a Member of Parliament for Rembau for almost 15 years. Now I have to work if there is an area that is willing to accept me. Or worst case scenario, I don’t run but there is no problem for me,” he said. As a party person, the former UMNO Youth Leader said, he will follow whatever the UMNO and Barisan Nasional (BN) leadership decides regarding the GE15 candidate and the seat he has to contest.
