KUALA LUMPUR, June 7 – Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim expressed his gratitude towards Umno president Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi for his support in forming the “unity government.” Anwar said he couldn’t have formed a stable government to fix the economy and gather the support of the MPs needed to form the majority if it hadn’t been for Zahid’s hard work and sacrifices behind the scenes. During the Unity Government Convention held at the Umno headquarters, Anwar thanked everyone for putting aside their differences and working for the collective good.
He aspired to rid Malaysia of systemic corruption and move the country away from old politics, which he said was made possible after the 15th general elections with the support of Zahid. Anwar and Zahid were fierce rivals before the GE15, but they joined forces to form a strong government after no party won a majority in the elections. Anwar has made good governance and ridding the country of corruption his top priorities, and he thanked everyone for their commitment to the cause and to each other.
The Unity Government Convention was attended by leaders from 19 parties, including DAP’s Anthony Loke, Gobind Singh Deo, and Kelvin Yii, Muda’s Syed Saddiq Abdul Rahman, and MCA’s Wee Ka Siong. Anwar expressed his hope to form a new Malaysia that is Madani and inclusive and to work together to rid the country of corruption and learn to forgive each other.
