
GEORGE TOWN, July 6 – Penang Hill Corporation (PHC) has joined forces with the Penang Art Society to launch the “Vivid Penang Hill” art programme, a collaborative effort aimed at commemorating the 100th anniversary of the Penang Hill Railway. Named “Vivid Penang Hill” to reflect the stunning beauty of Penang Hill, this art programme brings together local talents who will creatively capture the scenery, diverse flora and fauna, historical bungalows, and the iconic funicular railway through their artistic expressions.
The collaboration will culminate in an art exhibition scheduled for December 2023, where the masterpieces will be showcased to the public. As part of PHC’s commitment to promoting and nurturing creative talents, the “Vivid Penang Hill” art programme serves as a platform to recognize and showcase the artistic prowess of local talents. A total of 20 esteemed local masters have embarked on a passionate exploration of Penang Hill, delving into its enchanting vistas to create breathtaking paintings that encapsulate the essence of this iconic destination.
These artists will utilize various mediums, including oil, watercolor, and ink, infusing their own unique styles and techniques into their artworks. The participating artists are well-respected figures in the local art scene, such as Alex Leong Yim Kuan, Alice Loo, Anne Uh, Apple Yong, Cheah Leong Chow, Chin Swee Ching, Dato’ Chong Hon Fatt, Elain Wong, Hwang Sock Tsu, Khoo Cheang Jin, Koay Haw Wah, Koay Shao Peng, Lee Eng Beng, Liew Sin Fah, Lim Jee Yuan, Pang Kooi Kee, Sally Lee Hoi Har, Shaparel, Sim Saw Im@Shen Ying, and Tim Teh.
The upcoming exhibition will offer art enthusiasts and the general public an opportunity to witness the captivating drawings that capture the beauty and essence of Penang Hill, preserving it for future generations to appreciate. The strong collaboration between PHC, a leading statutory body, and the Penang Art Society, the oldest art society in Malaysia, aligns with the state’s initiative to support and foster the growth of the creative industry in Penang.
This collaboration, held in conjunction with the Centenary Celebration of the Penang Hill Railway (1923-2023), not only celebrates the artistic talents within the community but also highlights the significance of Penang Hill as an inspiring muse for artists. In addition to the “Vivid Penang Hill” art programme, PHC recently partnered with Equator College Penang to carry out a wall art painting at the lower station known as “Wall Art @ Penang Hill Lower Station.”
This collaboration provided students with an opportunity to showcase their artistic skills while contributing to the natural splendor of the hill. These collaborations serve as excellent examples of how a government agency can work alongside educational institutions and societies to promote arts and culture, while nurturing and supporting local talents.
