KUALA LUMPUR, April 14 — Tun Abdullah Ahmad Badawi, Malaysia’s fifth prime minister, passed away this evening at the National Heart Institute (IJN) at the age of 85. Affectionately known as Pak Lah, he had been battling dementia in recent years, which severely impacted his memory and health. He was admitted to IJN yesterday morning following breathing difficulties and was placed under intensive care before his passing, surrounded by loved ones.
Tun Abdullah, a former civil servant, led the country from 2003 to 2009 after succeeding Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad. His leadership was marked by a strong stance against corruption, efforts to reform the civil service, and a commitment to promoting moderate Islam. Widely respected for his calm demeanour, humility, and inclusive leadership style, he was seen as a unifying figure in Malaysian politics during his tenure.
In a statement, IJN Chief Executive Officer Prof. Dato’ Sri Dr. Mohamed Ezani Md Taib expressed deep sorrow over the loss, calling it a privilege and honour to care for Tun Abdullah in his final hours. “His humility and grace touched many of our staff,” he said. Attending cardiologist Dato’ Dr. Azmee Ghazi added, “Even in his final moments, he remained calm and kind.”
The family and the Government of Malaysia are expected to announce funeral arrangements in due course, and the public is respectfully asked to give the family privacy during this time of mourning.
