PUTRAJAYA, June 20 — Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil announced that the long-anticipated Online Safety Act 2024 is set to be enforced soon, pending finalisation of regulatory details by the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC).
Once the draft is ready and gazetted, the Act will empower authorities to address online harms more effectively and hold platform providers accountable through clearly defined duties of care. A special oversight committee, to be established under the Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Law and Institutional Reform), Datuk Seri Azalina Othman Said, will guide the Act’s enforcement.
While the legislation targets online safety and platform regulation, issues involving children will remain governed under the Child Act 2001. Fahmi also highlighted increased roles for sign language interpreters in official government events, signalling a broader push for inclusive communication.
