GEORGE TOWN, April 9 — The Penang government is set to hand over land for the Light Rail Transit (LRT) depot on Silicon Island to MRT Corporation Sdn Bhd as early as May.
Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow announced, the 27.7-hectare site will allow construction to begin in phases without waiting for the completion of the entire 930-hectare reclamation project.
Chow said the Silicon Island initiative aims to position Penang as a global gateway while addressing industrial land shortages.
The project is expected to contribute up to RM1.1 trillion to Malaysia’s GDP by 2050 and create around 220,000 jobs.
Designed as a greenfield development, it incorporates sustainability goals, including reduced carbon emissions and a shift towards public transport, alongside a Green Tech Park tailored for global investors.
