KUALA LUMPUR, Jun 1 – The decision on whether Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Abdul Razak can intervene in a suit brought by former minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Datuk Zaid Ibrahim against Ambank Islamic Berhad will be known on July 28.
The ex-parte originating suit was filed by Zaid against Ambank Islamic Berhad to get the bank to reveal five accounts allegedly owned by the prime minister in the bank amounting to RM2.6 billion. High Court Judicial Commissioner Rohani Ismail set the date in chambers after hearing submissions by counsel Datuk Mohd Hafarizam Harun, representing Najib, and counsel Datuk Seri Gopal Sri Ram for Zaid.
Mohd Hafarizam, when met by reporters, said he argued that Najib had an interest in the case and if the application of the prime minister as an intervenor was not allowed, it would be prejudicial to him. On Dec 14 2016, Najib applied to intervene in the ex-parte originating suit filed by Zaid against AmBank. Zaid in his suit filed on Oct 21 2016, among others, seeks to obtain a court order to allow him or his counsel to inspect the five accounts allegedly owned by Najib. — Bernama
