KUALA LUMPUR, April 28 – Digital Minister Gobind Singh Deo revealed that Malaysia Digital Economy Corporation (MDEC) has awarded Malaysia Digital Status to 193 companies in the first quarter of 2024. Half of these companies are in the information technology (infotech) sector, harnessing technologies like blockchain, Web3, and Artificial Intelligence to drive innovation and growth. Speaking at the KL20 Summit 2024, Gobind emphasized the significance of these developments in bolstering Malaysia’s digital economy.

Gobind highlighted Malaysia’s strides in digitalization since its inception in 1996, with the digital economy now contributing 23% to the gross domestic product (GDP). Moreover, Malaysia’s startup ecosystem has gained international recognition, ranking 20th in the World’s Strong Starters Ranking list. With over 3,000 local startups spanning various sectors, Malaysia’s startup ecosystem is valued at US$46 billion and continues to expand. Looking ahead, Gobind expressed Malaysia’s eagerness to leave a mark in the region, with plans underway for engagements during its ASEAN chairmanship in 2025.
