GEORGE TOWN, March 14 – The final round of pau eating competition which was held at Gurney Paragon here yesterday. 11 of the finalists man were gathered in Gurney Paragon Mall Atrium here yesterday morning to compete the grand prize and the title of “pau eating king”. 

Penangites Saw Eng Chuan, 24, got the crowd cheering as he finished eating 3 large-sized pau and 4 normal-seized pau ahead of everyone in the competition. He said this was his first time participate in eating competition which din’t expect to win the first place in the competition.

“I tell people that this is my first time who participate in the competition. My friend know I’m a big eater while encourage me to participate in this competition. Besides that, I also quite interest in this competition. Why not to have a try,” he said after the competition. 

Clocking nine minutes and 39 seconds to win the first place of the competition, the customer service said this is not his limit yet. He said he still can eat more. When asked how he prepared for the competition, Saw said: “I din’t prepare anything before the event. As usual, having breakfast yesterday morning.”

Scott Collister, 30,  who clocked 10:00, said this is not his first eating competition. He said he start participate eating competition since he is 20 years old. He said he have eaten his way through dozens of events like this in the United States. He said the first few bites of the pau is quite okay, but after twenty bites it feel disgusting. But, he said overall is okay.

Teoh Tsu Ken, 32,  who clocked 16:12, said this is his first eating competition. He said he unexpected that he can won in the competition. The winners for the top 3 participants, who is Saw Eng Chuan, Scott Collister and Teoh Tsu Ken will won the prizes of RM800, RM500 and RM300 cash vouchers respectively, with Tasty Congee and Noodle Wantun Shop the main prize sponsor. 

This pau eating competition is part of Gurney Paragon Mall ‘s Eat • Love • Food campaign in the month of March. The objective of the pau eating competition is to raise funds to aid SJK (C) Keow Kuang from Bukit Mertajam and SJK (C) Yeok Hua from Balik Pulau, Penang. The judge of the competition are Mr Khor Siang Gin, the group managing director of Hunza; Ms Maggie Fong, the founder and owner of the Balik Pulau Lodge cum CEO of Flyer King; and Dato’ Seri Joseph Lee, a very successful entrepreneur.
