KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 14 – The Malaysia Hindu Sangam said on Tuesday that the Deepavali this year falls on Nov 10 with clearing of the confusion over the date of the festival. Its president Datuk R.S. Mohan Shan said that the Sri Maha Mariamman Temple Dhevasthanam had also determined that the festival falls on that date.

Mohan Shan said hindus should observe Deepavali on ‘Saturthasi Tithi’, the 14th day of the month of ‘Iypasi’, based on the Hindu ‘panjangam’ calendar. He had been confirmed the date when asked to clear the confusion over the date among some Malaysian Hindus.

He said many calendars had printed the festival date correctly while one or two calendars had erroneously marked the date as Nov 11. Deepavali in Sanskrit literally means ‘Festival of Lights’, and Hindus illuminate their homes using clay lamps with wicks called “diyas” or other forms of light. The Hindus consider Deepavali, also called Diwali by north Indians, as one of their most important festivals.
