SEBERANG PERAI, December 14 — Penang Water Supply Corporation (PBAPP) CEO K. Pathmanathan announced that approximately 33% of affected consumers in Penang can expect the restoration of their water supply by January 12, two days after the planned four-day disruption starting on January 10. The estimated 197,025 consumers in Seberang Perai, including Butterworth and Perai, are expected to see their taps flowing within 48 hours of the disruption.

While the majority of the remaining consumers on the island will have their supply restored by the third day. Pathmanathan assured that water supply for 99% of all affected consumers in Penang should resume by the fourth day, and any remaining issues will be addressed on a case-by-case basis. The scheduled disruption, necessary for major valve replacement works and maintenance at 22 locations, will see the Sungai Dua Water Treatment Plant shut down on January 10. While the physical repair and maintenance take 24 hours, the normalization of water supply may take longer due to various factors.

PBAPP is taking precautions, including filling up all reservoirs two days earlier, requesting water tankers, and providing advance notice to factories to minimize potential losses. Pathmanathan emphasized that the scheduled interruption is a preventive measure to address leaking control valves at the Sungai Dua WTP, ensuring public safety and infrastructure stability.
