GEORGE TOWN, January 9 – As Penang braces for the January 2024 Scheduled Water Supply Interruption (SWSI), the Penang Water Supply Corporation (PBAPP) issues crucial clarifications to address concerns and speculation. PBAPP emphasizes that the allocation of tankers and static water tanks is not prioritized by state or parliamentary constituencies. The distribution is planned based on water demand, tanker routes, and PBAPP’s 4-stage water supply services recovery plan, ensuring fairness across the entire state.

Contrary to misconceptions, PBAPP’s 4-stage water supply recovery plan indicates that 33% of affected consumers will have water supply recovered in 48 hours, reaching 84% at the 72-hour mark. The remaining 16% will receive water in 96 hours. The term “4-days No Water” does not apply to the majority of consumers. PBAPP has extensively publicized the list of areas affected by the January 2024 SWSI through mass media, flyers, social media posts, and newspaper advertisements. Only consumers in the listed areas will experience water disruption. PBAPP urges residents to refer to official announcements instead of relying on social media speculation.

PBAPP refutes claims of prioritizing water supply recovery for large customers over domestic consumers. The recovery process follows a set sequence, addressing areas closest to the Sungai Dua Water Treatment Plant first. The recovery stages ensure a systematic approach, with 99.5% recovery expected by 6:00 am on January 14, 2024. PBAPP acknowledges the inconvenience caused by the water disruption and urges consumers to follow official updates for accurate information. The corporation remains committed to addressing the water needs of affected residents during this challenging period.
