GEORGE TOWN, April 8 – In anticipation of heightened water consumption during the hot and dry Hari Raya Aidilfitri festivities, the Penang Water Supply Corporation (PBAPP) has initiated its “Hari Raya Aidilfitri 2024 Water Contingency Plan” to ensure uninterrupted water supply in Penang. With a fleet of 13 water tankers, including 3 Jumbo tankers, on standby, PBAPP aims to serve neighborhoods in Seberang Perai Selatan (SPS) and certain areas in Relau and Bukit Belah, Daerah Barat Daya (DBD).

PBAPP’s decision to implement the contingency plan stems from the projected surge in water consumption, especially during the “balik kampung” period and Hari Raya celebrations. With an average water consumption figure of 927 million litres per day (MLD) recorded in February 2024, surpassing the previous year’s average, PBAPP anticipates a similar or even higher demand during the festive season. To address this, the corporation urges water consumers to utilize water wisely and cooperatively work towards conserving resources, particularly amidst the ongoing hot and dry weather conditions in Penang.

While PBAPP assures that the overall water supply status in Penang is currently manageable, it emphasizes the importance of sustained vigilance until significant rainfall replenishes reservoir levels in key dams affecting water supply across the region. In light of this, PBAPP reiterates its appeal to all water consumers in Penang to reduce water consumption by 10% in April, May, and June 2024, in order to ensure sufficient water reserves for the community’s needs.
