KUALA LUMPUR, April 17 – The Ministry of Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability (NRES) is actively engaged in formulating a comprehensive national policy on plastic production, usage, and waste management, aligning with the objectives of the Global Plastic Treaty (GPT) 2022. Minister Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad disclosed that extensive consultations with diverse stakeholders, including ministries, government agencies, industries, and non-governmental organizations (NGOs), are underway to develop a robust policy framework.

Emphasizing the importance of inclusive engagement, Nik Nazmi affirmed the ministry’s commitment to involve civil society in crafting Malaysia’s position on the GPT, aiming for a just transition that curtails unnecessary plastic consumption. Malaysia’s participation in four rounds of international negotiations on the GPT reflects its dedication to addressing plastic pollution comprehensively, particularly in marine environments. Nik Nazmi highlighted the findings of a recent survey by Greenpeace International, indicating strong public support, with 87% of Malaysians favoring measures to reduce plastic production to combat pollution.

This endorsement underscores the alignment of sustainability initiatives with the Malaysia Madani agenda, emphasizing the government’s commitment to environmental stewardship and public welfare.
