KUALA LUMPUR, April 20 – Sony has taken a pioneering step in the industry by becoming the first company to eliminate the use of polystyrene foam cushioning material for large TVs, specifically affecting the BRAVIA 9 series, including the 85-inch 4K Mini LED TV set to debut in Hong Kong and Taiwan. Instead, Sony will utilize Kaneka Green Planet, a biodegradable biopolymer material derived from biomass and developed by Kaneka Corporation, for cushioning purposes.

This innovative approach aligns with Sony’s commitment to environmental sustainability, as the Kaneka Green Planet material decomposes into CO2 and water in various environments, including soil and seawater, effectively addressing concerns regarding plastic pollution. Sony has tailored the mould structure to suit the characteristics of Green Planet, ensuring both impact resistance and aesthetic design are maintained while streamlining production processes.

Leveraging years of expertise in packaging design and simulation technology, Sony aims to further reduce environmental impact and advance towards its environmental goals outlined in the “Road to Zero” plan, aiming for zero environmental impact by 2050.
