KUALA LUMPUR, April 23 ― Human Resources Minister Steven Sim Chee Keong announced that workers in Malaysia have the right to request flexible working arrangements, including variations in time, days, and location of work, under Sections 60P and 60Q of the Employment Act 1955. Employees can submit requests to their employers, who must respond within 60 days and provide reasons if rejecting the proposal. Minister Sim emphasized the Ministry’s commitment to reviewing and enhancing labor policies to support welfare, skills development, and economic competitiveness.

The announcement, made through a social media post, highlighted Part XIIC of the Employment Act 1955, which addresses flexible working arrangements. Section 60P grants employees the right to request variations in their work schedule or location, subject to certain conditions. Sim’s statement follows a similar initiative in Singapore, where workers can now apply for flexible work arrangements, including four-day workweeks and increased remote work options. This move aligns with efforts to promote fair and progressive employment practices in the region.
